Lower North Shore, NSW

Project Overview

This home was originally built in the 1940s and extended in the 1980s. It took around 12 months to design and a further 24 months to extensively reconstruct the entire residence.

The entire front facade was rebuilt to a striking contemporary design. To accommodate the additions, 600 cubic metres of sandstone were excavated at the entry level, which provides direct street access to the residence as well as a double garage and workshop. In a cavity behind the entry hall are two 5500-litre rainwater tanks that provides water for gardening and cleaning exterior paths and vehicles. There is also access to a void area running around the complete lower level for maintenance purpose.

A new sandstone stairway leads from the entry level to the first floor, where there is a newly constructed home office complete with kitchenette and separate bathroom. The position of the office takes full advantage of the northern aspect. The grassed area features an ornamental pond with stepping stones and lilies which adds to a sense of peace and tranquillity.

The exterior stairway then continues to the ground floor level. This level features living/dining, kitchen with walk-in pantry, music room with cabinet, guest bedroom with wardrobe, guest bathroom with double basins, shower and bath, separate toilet with vanity and laundry. The kitchen is very contemporary in design with polyurethane painted cabinets, Caesarstone bench tops and splashbacks and stainless steel appliances. The living/dining area features motorised blinds which soften the overall look and minimise glare while permitting a vista over the bay. At the rear of this level a large family room leads to a polished concrete patio and landscaped gardens with a large water feature.

A polished tallowwood staircase climbs from the living area to the next level which contains two bedrooms complete with wardrobes. Also on this level is a utility room for reading, painting and recreation. The master bedroom has a walk-in-wardrobe, large ensuite complete with double basin and two-person shower. A second bathroom is complete with double shower and vanity. Optimising their extensive water views, both bedrooms feature motorised exterior metallic shutters which block the northern light in summer and darken the rooms at night. Shutters are also featured on the balcony off the bedrooms and hallway, all of which also have direct access to the exterior undercover patio.
